JOYCE GARBACIAKAfter all of those years of working alongside Ted Perry, I had to leave TV news to preserve my sanity. Just kidding. Teddy P. is a great friend. In fact, it was Ted who first encouraged me to go on Dave & Carole’s show. I always resisted because the thought of trying to be even mildly funny scared the living daylights out of me. When I finally did go on the show in February of 2005, it was to share the news that I was leaving the night shift and almost 17 years at Fox 6 to spend more time with my husband and three daughters. OK. Just my daughters. My husband doesn’t really want me around all that much, but that’s another story. Shortly afterward, Marcus asked if I’d be available to fill in for Carole periodically and – though still scared silly – I agreed.
It turns out I was worried for nothing. Don’t get me wrong. I’m still not all that funny. But Dave, Carole, KB and Marcus make it all so easy. They even got me to admit on the air that I can speak backwards. I even sang a Christmas carol backwards to prove it. Elgnij Slleb. Try it some time.
My schedule is a little more packed these days because I joined WISN-Channel 12 earlier this fall. They’re letting me work part time on special projects I can do during the day when my daughters are in school. And I get to fill-in anchor on 12 News every now and then, too. It’s the best of both worlds and I know how lucky I am. Though I doubt I’ll be singing Elgnij Slleb on 12’s air anytime soon.
